The Jam Session that Changed my Life...
Sometimes something happens in your guitar journey that changes everything and sends you down a completely different path.
For me, this happened about 8 years into playing.
At that point in my playing I could do “some stuff” - mostly just from brute force practicing my ass off. The next step (I thought) was to find someone to jam with so I put an ad on Craigslist (am I showing my age yet? ).
A younger guy replied – we’ll call him “THE DUDE.”
Thing was, he’d only been playing for about 2 years and I really didn’t want to show up just to him a guitar lesson. But we were both into 80s hair metal and he kept pushing so I went.
I show up, we start to jam... and THE DUDE absolutely destroys me.
- He could shred faster
- He could play all over the fretboard
- He could improvise and it sounded sick
- His ear was better, understood how and why things worked.
Everything…
And yes… he even had a half stack
I was in shock...

It's not really in my nature to think that some people are magically "gifted" while the rest of us are doomed to mediocrity begging for the crumbs...
So I picked his brain trying to understand WTF was going on and I found it really wasn't "talent" but rather:
- It doesn’t matter how hard you work if you’re working on the wrong things
- Some people work hard… and some people work smart
- Some people have access to better information and training
That send me down a rabbit hole of studying how the brain learns, going through 11 guitar teachers searching for the best methods, and eventually starting my own local guitar school where I could refine my methods and test what works on real students.
Now after 15 yrs of running a local school I have to say its almost unfair how quickly people can get results and make progress if they
- Get the RIGHT INFORMATION
- Practice it in the RIGHT ORDER
- and practice it in the RIGHT WAY
If any of these are wrong you'll struggle.
This is also what led me to creating the Guitar GPS Method and now this 28‑Day Guitar Breakthrough Challenge
If you’ve been grinding for years and still feel stuck, it’s not because you’re doomed to mediocrity. It’s because no one gave you a clear system and a way to show you what's missing and what to do next.
For 28 days, in 30 focused minutes a day, I’ll coach you through:
Uncovering bad habits, holes and gaps that are holding you back
Maybe it's your:
- Rhythm and timing
- Aural skills
- Lack musical understanding
- Lack of fretboard knowledge
- Sloppy technique
- Working on sh** that doesn't get you anywhere...
If you’ve ever had that “I should be better by now” moment, this is the 28 days I wish I had when my friends told me to quit and when “The Dude” put me to shame...
Go to https://go.guitargpsmethod.com/28-day-challenge to get on the list and we'll let you know the next time we open up the next cohort.
